The Ancient Roots:

Long before Halloween became an excuse to dress up like an idiot, knock on strangers doors for candy, and decorated your lawn with fake body parts, there was a celebration marking something more serious…The coming of winter.
To find out where it all started, we have to travel back over 2000 years ago to the ancient Celtic people. They lived in what is now Ireland, the UK, and northern France.
For the Celtic people, Halloween wasn’t called Halloween – it was a festival called Samhain(pronounced Sow-in) which translates to “Summers End”. This festival was celebrated on October 31st and November 1st. This marked the transition from the harvest season into winter. Crops were gathered, livestock were brought in from the pastures, and communities prepared for the cold, dark months ahead.
I couldn’t imagine… Not having electricity, central heating, or even a grocery store down the road. Winter wasn’t exactly something to look forward to back then.
The Celtics believe that on the night of October 31, the boundary between the world of the living and the dead became blurred. They believe the ghost of the dead returned to earth for one night. They also believe that the presence of these otherworldly spirits made it much easier for their priests, the druids, to predict the future of fortunes for the coming winter.
Over the centuries, the festival we became associated with supernatural beings and the world of the dead.
One thing worth mentioning: historians don’t have a complete record of ancient Samhain rituals. Many of the stories were written down much later. Like centuries.
How is that possible
People from centuries later are writing stories… How the hell did they know?
And here we are, many moons have passed, many centuries and religious observances and customs have evolved, eventually giving us the Halloween we recognized today.

Now, for tonight’s question:

If you lived hundreds of years ago, surrounded by darkness and convinced something might be wandering outside your door, would you have gone out to investigate that strange noise? Or would you have stayed your ass inside?

Almost reminds me of something M. Night Shyamalan might come up with 🤣

Tomorrow: When the Dead Come Visiting.
